Philippines arrests US citizen for immigration overstay in Laguna
A 27‑year‑old American woman identified only as “Kristy” was detained by the Philippine Bureau of Immigration (BI) in Cabuyao, Laguna on July 30 after authorities determined she had overstayed her authorized period. The BI‑Intelligence Division, acting on intelligence received about her presence, found that her last approved extension expired in January 2026 and no further extension was filed.
The bureau said it will file deportation charges against her under the Philippine Immigration Act of 1940. She has been transferred to the BI Warden Facility in Bicutan, Taguig City pending resolution of her case. BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado urged all foreign visitors to comply with immigration laws, emphasizing that intelligence‑driven operations will continue.
The operation involved BI personnel led by Fortunato “Jun” Manahan, with assistance from the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
