Philippines thwarts two bomb incidents ahead of Marcos' State of the Nation address
On the early morning of 27 July 2026, an explosion believed to be caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) occurred near the entrance of the Department of Justice in Manila at about 12:17 a.m. No casualties were reported. Police and bomb‑disposal units responded, securing the site and beginning a review of CCTV footage and forensic evidence.
A few hours later, at approximately 8:30 a.m., a second suspected IED was discovered outside the Senate building in Pasay City after a tow‑truck driver alerted security. The device was rendered safe without incident; investigators recovered a blasting cap, a clock, a 9 V battery and a jar of brown powder for analysis. Police chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said there is a high probability the two incidents are linked. Approximately 20,000 police personnel were deployed to ensure security for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s State of the Nation Address later that day. The investigations remain ongoing.
