Philippines boosts naval defense with ASW helicopter purchase and EU security assistance

The Philippine Navy plans to acquire six anti‑submarine warfare (ASW) helicopters under the Re‑Horizon 3 phase of its modernisation programme, with a projected budget of roughly Php 42.3 billion. The helicopters will support new frigates and other surface combatants, enhancing the navy’s ASW and anti‑surface capabilities.

In parallel, the European Union deepened defence ties with the Philippines. EU High Representative Kaja Kallas met Defence Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro Jr. and announced a EUR 15 million assistance package under the European Peace Facility. The funding will improve the Philippines’ maritime domain awareness, early‑warning systems and coordination of naval and coast‑guard forces in the Indo‑Pacific region.
