Philippines Boosts Security Ties Amid Rising China Tensions in South China Sea

China has intensified its coercive diplomacy in the West Philippine Sea, barring Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro and his family from entry and deploying a suspicious floating platform in the lagoon of Bajo de Masinloc. Manila denounced the actions as “unfriendly” and warned that the platform could become a foothold for further militarisation.

In response, the Philippines is deepening strategic security cooperation with Indo‑Pacific allies. At the Shangri‑La Dialogue, Manila and Tokyo upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership, promising accelerated transfers of warships, destroyers, aircraft and anti‑ship missiles. The United States announced the delivery of a decommissioned cutter to the Philippine Coast Guard, while Vietnam and Japan also pledged enhanced defence collaboration. These moves aim to strengthen the Philippines’ navy and coast guard capabilities as tensions with China continue to rise in the South China Sea.
