Philippines concludes Measles-Rubella immunization campaign
The Department of Health has concluded its 2026 Measles-Rubella Supplemental Immunization Activity (MR-SIA) across various regions in the Philippines, reporting significant coverage results.
In the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Kalinga province earned regional recognition for its rollout performance. After initially ranking fifth, Kalinga intensified efforts to finish second in the region. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Marilyn Duyan attributed this success to the collaboration between health workers, local government units, and partners like the Philippine Red Cross and the Department of Education, noting that the team overcame challenges including inclement weather and social media misinformation.
In Western Visayas (Region 6), the campaign achieved a 62% regional coverage rate. Iloilo province recorded the highest coverage in the region at 67.7%, followed by Antique at 63.5%. Other provinces included Guimaras, Iloilo City, Capiz, and Aklan. Health officials emphasized the importance of vaccination in preventing measles outbreaks, noting that one infected individual can potentially infect up to 18 others. UNICEF has reaffirmed its support for the Department of Health to sustain immunization activities through routine and school-based programs.
