Philippines summons Chinese Ambassador over ‘use of force’ remarks

The Philippines has summoned Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan to protest remarks he made regarding potential military force in the South China Sea. During a forum on October 15, Jing stated that while China could ‘easily win’ if it chose to use force, it would instead choose peace.

Philippine officials, including President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Foreign Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro, condemned the comments as a ‘thinly veiled threat’ and ‘provocative.’ The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) expressed serious concern that such rhetoric aggravates the already sensitive bilateral relationship. In response, some Philippine lawmakers have proposed a resolution to declare the ambassador persona non grata.

The Chinese Embassy in Manila has rejected these accusations, claiming that Philippine politicians and journalists are misinterpreting facts, taking statements out of context, and ‘creating hype.’ The Defense Press Corps of the Philippines (DPC) also issued a rebuttal, defending journalists who reported the ambassador's remarks verbatim and accusing the embassy of attempting to manipulate the narrative.
