Philippines continues Lawak Island construction amid Chinese maritime activity
Tensions in the South China Sea have escalated as the Philippines continues construction on shelter port works at Lawak Island despite protests from China. Simultaneously, the Philippine Coast Guard has reported that a Chinese survey vessel, the Haiyang Dizhi Shihao, has been operating within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone for 25 days.
Rear Adm. Jay Tarriela stated that the vessel, operated by the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey, has been conducting marine scientific research near Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal without a permit. Tarriela noted the vessel is capable of deep seabed drilling and suggested its presence was timed to coincide with severe weather in the Philippines to limit interception capabilities.
These maritime developments occur alongside reports of expanded Chinese infrastructure and surveillance capabilities on Yagong Island and the emergence of new radar sites, reflecting a broader contest over maritime access and resource governance in the region.
