Philippines culls hundreds of pigs amid African Swine Fever outbreaks in Cebu and Basilan

Local veterinary authorities in Cebu City confirmed African Swine Fever (ASF) in Barangay Quiot, leading to the humane culling and burial of 19 pigs after nine hogs tested positive. The Cebu City Department of Veterinary Medicine and Fisheries, headed by Dr. Jessica Maribojoc, implemented movement controls, intensified surveillance and coordinated with national agencies to contain the outbreak within 15 days.

In Lamitan City, Basilan, an ASF outbreak in Barangay Calugusan resulted in the death of 284 pigs and affected 113 small‑scale hog raisers. The city and provincial veterinary offices carried out a mass depopulation operation, with Mayor Roderick Furigay announcing tightened biosecurity measures, movement restrictions and ongoing surveillance to prevent further spread.
