Philippines Defense Secretary accuses China of evading illegal activity issues

Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has accused the Chinese Foreign Ministry of evading questions regarding the illegal activities of Chinese nationals in the Philippines. The dispute follows a raid at a steel plant where authorities allegedly found the use of substandard and radioactive materials, as well as environmental violations such as dumping untreated toxic waste. Teodoro maintained that law enforcement acted on court-issued warrants and indisputable evidence.

In response, China announced actions against over 100 Filipinos suspected of violating Chinese immigration laws. Teodoro characterized this as retaliation intended to pressure the Philippines following its law enforcement operations.

The situation has sparked domestic political debate in the Philippines. Vice President Sara Duterte and Representative Paolo Duterte have demanded clarity regarding Teodoro’s remarks concerning officials who may be ‘pro-China’ or who fail to uphold national policy regarding the West Philippine Sea. The controversy centers on whether public officials are faithfully protecting national interests or if their personal views are undermining established government policy.
