Philippines Defense Secretary challenges China over alleged politician links
Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has challenged China to name specific Filipino politicians allegedly linked to Beijing. This demand follows reports that China is considering measures against the Philippines, including the disclosure of transactions and assets belonging to certain lawmakers in China, Hong Kong, and Macao.
Teodoro questioned the credibility of these allegations, suggesting they may be intended to damage reputations. He also characterized social media posts from the Chinese Embassy in Manila regarding Filipino politicians as interference in the country’s internal affairs.
Diplomatic tensions have escalated following remarks by Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan. The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) summoned Ambassador Jing to express serious concern and strong objection to statements deemed provocative and undiplomatic. While China has defended its ambassador and urged Manila to restrain what it calls irresponsible actions by individual politicians, the DFA emphasized the Philippines' right to take diplomatic measures as necessary.
