China imposes travel and financial sanctions on Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced travel bans for Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro, his spouse and child, preventing them from entering mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. The ministry also prohibited Chinese individuals and organisations from conducting any transactions or cooperation with the family, describing Teodoro's public criticism of Beijing's South China Sea policies as "irresponsible remarks".

The Philippine Department of National Defense called the measures an unfriendly act, while Teodoro vowed to continue his duties, saying he was punished for speaking the truth. Analysts note the sanctions mark a hardening of Beijing's diplomatic tactics amid ongoing maritime disputes, though they are largely symbolic because the official has no known financial interests in China.
