Philippines Department of Health warns of rising seasonal illnesses

The Philippine Department of Health (DOH) has reported an 8% increase in influenza-like illnesses, with recent cases totaling 11,137. DOH Acting Secretary Edwin Mercado noted that cooler weather and upcoming holiday gatherings contribute to the rise in cases as people congregate indoors.

To combat the trend, the DOH is launching a two-month targeted vaccination campaign starting next week. The campaign will prioritize high-risk groups, including senior citizens, young children below preschool age, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions.

In Baguio City, temperatures reached 18°C on 28 October. Health officials in the Cordillera region have advised the public to take precautions against respiratory illnesses, allergic rhinitis, and eczema, which often worsen during the Amihan season. Recommended preventative measures include regular handwashing, wearing masks in dusty environments, and using moisturizers to manage dry skin.
