Philippines DOLE: Workers injured by bad weather may claim benefits
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has reminded workers that injuries sustained due to adverse weather conditions may qualify for benefits under the Employees’ Compensation (EC) program. This guidance comes amid persistent monsoon rains in the Philippines.
According to Employees’ Compensation Commission (ECC) Executive Director Kaima Via Velasquez, the program covers accidents that occur while traveling to and from work, such as slipping on wet roads or falling into open manholes.
Eligible private-sector employees may access income replacement, which acts as a substitute salary during temporary disability, and medical reimbursements covering up to 60 percent of treatment and consultation costs. Private-sector workers should file claims through the Social Security System (SSS), while government employees should coordinate through the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS).
