Philippines egg industry modernization project launched in Batangas

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. visited a P300-million egg processing facility in San Jose, Batangas, to support the modernization of the country's egg industry.

The Batangas Egg Producers Multipurpose Cooperative (BEPCO) is expanding its operations through a P66-million investment, consisting of a P50-million grant from the Egg Industry Development Project (EIDP) and over P16 million in equipment loans from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). The Department of Agriculture (DA) also provided a three-story cold storage facility with an 80-ton capacity.

The project utilizes technology developed by the DOST to produce liquid and pasteurized eggs. This process includes washing, breaking, separating, and pasteurizing eggs under controlled conditions to ensure food safety, longer shelf life, and strict quality control, including Salmonella testing.

San Jose, officially recognized as the ‘Egg Basket of the Philippines,’ produces between 7 million and 10 million eggs daily. The modernization aims to reduce production losses, manage supply fluctuations, and ensure stable livelihoods for farmers while maintaining reasonable prices for consumers.
