Philippines El Niño causes P6.87 billion in agricultural losses
The El Niño phenomenon has caused an estimated P6.87 billion in agricultural damage and losses across 14 regions in the Philippines. According to the Department of Agriculture, approximately 223,214 farmers have been affected. Corn has sustained the most significant impact, accounting for 71.38 percent of total losses, while rice losses reached P1.53 billion. The agency projects a potential decline in rice production of about 700,000 metric tons this year.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warns that the phenomenon could intensify into a ‘very strong’ El Niño between September and December, with dry conditions potentially persisting through the first half of 2027.
In response to the threat of prolonged drought, local governments are implementing contingency measures. In Bacolod City, Mayor Greg Gasataya has directed the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office to develop response strategies, including the procurement of water tankers and filtration systems to ensure water security for affected barangays.
