Philippines bans fresh ube exports to protect domestic supply

The Philippines has implemented an indefinite ban on the export of fresh ube (purple yam) to protect its domestic supply and agricultural genetic resources. As the world’s largest producer, the Philippine government aims to prevent other nations from utilizing its native seedlings to establish competing production hubs.

The decision comes amid a massive global surge in demand for the vibrant purple root, which has become a viral sensation on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Ube is increasingly featured in high-end Michelin-starred restaurants and major global coffee chains, including Starbucks and Costa Coffee. The United States has emerged as the largest consumer market, with restaurant menu presence increasing more than threefold between 2021 and 2025.

Despite the commercial boom, the industry faces significant challenges. Domestic production is under pressure due to aging farmers, climate change, and a scarcity of planting materials. The ban is intended to stabilize the local supply chain and ensure that the Philippines maintains its competitive advantage in the global culinary market.
