Philippines government releases PHP800 million for flood relief

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. convened a Cabinet meeting to address flood response and mitigation following heavy rains caused by the enhanced southwest monsoon. The government has released nearly PHP800 million in humanitarian assistance through the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), which includes over PHP3 million in direct financial aid to affected residents. An additional PHP832 million in standby funds is available nationwide for disaster response.

During a briefing with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, President Marcos noted that while some areas in Metro Manila remain submerged, floodwaters are receding faster than in previous years and depths in certain locations have decreased. To improve long-term management, the government is conducting dredging operations, considering seawall upgrades, and has identified 30 potential sites in the National Capital Region to serve as rainwater cisterns.

Various agencies are actively responding: the Department of Environment and Natural Resources is monitoring waterways, the Department of Public Works and Highways is assessing flooded areas and coordinating with Quezon City on drainage plans, and the Department of Health is monitoring for potential increases in leptospirosis cases.
