Philippines cities face hazardous air quality from transboundary haze

Hazardous air quality caused by transboundary haze has triggered public health warnings and school suspensions in parts of the Philippines.

In Bacolod, the Environmental Management Bureau-Negros Island Region reported that air quality has reached “very unhealthy” levels. Local officials have urged residents to take precautions, noting that fine particulate matter (PM2.5) can penetrate the lungs and bloodstream, potentially exacerbating respiratory and cardiovascular conditions. The haze is attributed to the southwest monsoon carrying transboundary pollution, worsened by local atmospheric conditions.

In Cebu City, authorities have extended the suspension of face-to-face classes for all levels in both public and private schools until at least September 5. Acting Mayor Tomas R. Osmeña issued an executive order to maintain the suspension of in-person classes, examinations, and school activities due to the ongoing hazardous air quality. Health officials have advised the use of N95 or fitted masks to mitigate risks.
