Philippines Highlights Disaster Resilience Initiatives During National Disaster Resilience Month

Senator Loren Legarda used National Disaster Resilience Month to call for a focus on protecting Filipino families, farmers and fishers from floods, typhoons and climate impacts. She referenced key legislation she helped pass—including the Climate Change Act of 2009, the People’s Survival Fund Act and the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act— and noted the Philippines ranked first on the 2025 World Risk Index, underscoring its vulnerability. Legarda urged that preparedness become a daily habit and that funds such as the People’s Survival Fund be used for early‑warning systems, climate‑resilient agriculture and coastal management.

In the town of Taytay, the municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office staged “Rescuelympics 2026,” a competition that tested barangay teams on rescue, first‑aid and disaster‑response skills. Local officials, including Mayor Allan Martine De Leon and barangay captains, participated to demonstrate support for a culture of readiness and community safety.
