Philippines honors everyday citizens and historical figures for heroism

The Philippines is recognizing various forms of heroism through both modern initiatives and historical commemorations. The “Hero For All: Honoring Stories of the Everyday Filipino” initiative is celebrating 20 ordinary citizens for their acts of courage and selflessness. Supported by Casino Plus and the AR Foundation, the program provides a total of ₱1,000,000 in awards, split equally between the individual honorees and their respective partner community organizations to support local advocacy.

In a separate context of remembrance, the country also highlights lesser-known historical figures during National Heroes Day. These include activists and elders like Macli-ing Dulag, who fought for indigenous rights and environmental protection against hydroelectric dam projects, and Maria Lorena Barros, a pioneer of modern Philippine feminism and founder of the MAKIBAKA women’s organization.
