Philippines investigates impact of rising pork imports

The Philippine Department of Agriculture has launched a preliminary investigation into whether rising pork imports are harming domestic producers. The probe aims to determine if temporary protective measures are necessary to safeguard the local economy.

Initial findings suggest negative impacts on local stakeholders, including declining producer prices, shrinking incomes, reduced market shares, and a drop in self-sufficiency levels. The investigation covers fresh, chilled, and frozen pork, as well as slaughter by-products and fats.

This investigation follows the recent reopening of the Philippine market to German and Spanish pork, ending a roughly seven-year import ban. While German meat industry stakeholders are actively seeking long-term partnerships with Philippine importers and distributors to capitalize on this restored access, the potential for new trade disruptions in European pig markets remains a concern.
