Philippines: Investigations launched into separate abuse allegations

Two separate incidents of alleged abuse in the Philippines have prompted investigations by local authorities and government commissions.

In Mindanao, a teacher has filed an administrative complaint with the National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) against her partner, Police Corporal Ricardo J. Silva Jr. The complainant alleges repeated physical abuse spanning nearly nine years. NAPOLCOM Commissioner Rafael Vicente Calinisan stated that the commission will pursue appropriate action against the officer while ensuring due process, emphasizing a commitment to disciplining police officers accused of domestic violence.

In Mapandan, Pangasinan, a teacher is under investigation following allegations of maltreating two students. The incident, which was captured on video, reportedly involved the teacher ordering students to pass around a bottle of soft drink and spit into it before requiring two classmates to drink the liquid. Following the incident, the students were seen vomiting outside the classroom. Mapandan Councilor Percival Biagtan has contacted the Municipal Social Welfare and Development office and the Department of Education to ensure the students receive medical checkups and to address the teacher's conduct.
