Philippines launches measles-rubella vaccination campaign

The Department of Health has launched a Measles-Rubella Supplemental Immunization Activity (MR-SIA) across the Philippines, running from August 10 to August 28. The campaign targets children aged six months to 59 months to prevent outbreaks of these highly contagious diseases.

In Central Visayas, health officials aim to vaccinate approximately 630,000 children, targeting a 95 percent coverage rate. The drive includes local government units in Cebu and Bohol, with vaccination sites located at rural health units, schools, and malls. Health workers are also prioritizing outreach to remote communities.

In Naga City, Mayor Leni Robredo has urged parents to participate, noting that the city has recorded several suspected measles cases between 2021 and 2025. Along with the vaccines, eligible children will receive Vitamin A supplementation to support immune health and development. Medical officials emphasized that the supplemental dose provides stronger protection even for children who have already completed routine immunizations.
