Philippines observes National Heroes Day with calls for civic duty

As the Philippines observes National Heroes Day, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. led wreath-laying ceremonies at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. In his address, the President urged citizens to go beyond mere remembrance by embodying the courage, patriotism, and responsibility of the nation’s historical figures. He emphasized that the spirit of heroism persists in modern-day contributors, including soldiers, first responders, teachers, healthcare workers, farmers, fisherfolk, and overseas Filipino workers.

Marcos also highlighted the role of the Philippine Coast Guard, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in defending national sovereignty, reaffirming the country's commitment to the 2016 Arbitral Award and international maritime law.

In regional contexts, Davao City officials honored local figures like Datu Bago, noting that heroism has evolved from battlefield resistance to community service. Meanwhile, Senator Loren Legarda called for tangible support for everyday heroes, advocating for better wages, social protection, and improved working conditions for essential workers.

Regarding labor regulations, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) reminded private-sector employees that National Heroes Day is a regular holiday, qualifying workers for double pay if they report for duty.
