Philippines officials propose non-bailable penalties for illegal firearms

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla is advocating for stricter penalties regarding the possession of loose firearms in the Philippines. Remulla has proposed amending Republic Act 11766, also known as the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, to make the illegal possession of loose firearms a non-bailable offense punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

The proposal follows recent fatal school shootings in Zamboanga City. Remulla argued that current penalties lack sufficient deterrence because suspects can post bail while cases are pending. He noted that congressional leaders are working to expedite amendments to the law, with potential action expected by January.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has expressed openness to supporting tougher penalties if the legislation is deemed beneficial to national safety. Malacañang officials stated the President will review specific provisions once the proposed bills are passed by Congress, emphasizing the need for both legislative action on illegal weapons and responsible firearm ownership among legal owners.
