Philippines prepares for prolonged drought and water supply risks

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has warned of significantly declining rainfall across much of Luzon, with dry conditions expected to persist through early 2027. This forecast has raised concerns regarding potential water shortages similar to the 2019 Metro Manila water crisis.

Authorities are implementing various preparedness measures. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has identified approximately 14,000 barangays nationwide as priority areas for drought preparedness. Officials, including Environment Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna, have urged the public to conserve water, collect rainwater, and report leaking pipes to minimize distribution losses.

While water levels at the Angat and La Mesa dams remain relatively high, experts emphasize the importance of conservation. In Naga City, local initiatives have emerged to bolster community resilience, such as the installation of a 4,000-liter solar-powered rainwater catchment facility in Barangay Sabang designed to provide a hybrid water source during periods of scarcity.
