Philippines prepares for Super El Niño through water and food security measures
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has outlined a multi-sectoral government strategy to mitigate the impact of the anticipated ‘Super El Niño’ in the Philippines. The administration’s preparations focus on food and water security, agriculture, education, and health.
To address health concerns, the President stated that efforts are underway to ensure hospitals remain operational with adequate medical supplies to manage diseases associated with the dry season. In terms of agriculture, while current rice and meat supplies are reported as sufficient, the government is planning for future seasons. Support for farmers will include training through the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
Water conservation is a primary focus. The President has urged citizens to engage in rainwater harvesting at the household level and has announced plans for cloud-seeding operations to induce rainfall. The government also intends to distribute water filters and provide education on purification techniques. To protect the education sector, officials are considering alternative teaching modes to accommodate students during periods of extreme heat.
