Philippines prepares to host 49th ASEAN Summit in 2026
The Philippines is preparing to host the 49th ASEAN Summit and related meetings in Metro Manila from November 16 to 18, 2026. Tourism Secretary Dita Angara-Mathay stated that preparations are on track to welcome more than 10,000 delegates, including leaders from ASEAN member states, ASEAN Plus Three, and East Asia Summit dialogue partners.
While several leaders have indicated their attendance, including representatives from China, Australia, and South Korea, confirmations are still pending for the President of the United States, the Prime Minister of India, and the Prime Minister of Japan. Chinese President Xi Jinping has declined the invitation, though Chinese Premier Li Qiang is expected to attend on his behalf. Other invited guests include the Prime Minister of Canada and the Managing Director of the IMF for plenary sessions, as well as the President of Brazil and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom for the East Asia Summit.
To support the event, the Department of Transportation and the Department of Tourism have signed a memorandum of agreement to provide free jeepney rides in select parts of Metro Manila, aiming to assist commuters while promoting local destinations.
