Philippines President signals potential joint oil and gas exploration with China

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. stated that there is a “very high possibility” of the Philippines and China engaging in joint oil and gas exploration in the South China Sea, despite ongoing territorial disputes.

Speaking to foreign journalists, Marcos emphasized the urgency of securing energy supplies due to recent price surges and supply disruptions. He noted that negotiations regarding the scope of authority and unresolved issues are making progress, stating, “We must find new ways... I think, for now, we have made progress.”

Marcos also clarified that the Philippines has no policy of “distancing itself from China,” noting that China remains one of the country’s largest sources of investment. He expressed a desire to “reset” relations to manage tensions and prevent misunderstandings from escalating into conflict. While maintaining a stance on Philippine maritime rights, he indicated an optimistic outlook for continued economic cooperation.
