Philippines provinces implement measures to mitigate El Niño impacts
Local governments in the Philippines are implementing mitigation strategies to address the impacts of El Niño. In Negros Occidental, Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz II stated that the province has sufficient funds to support programs aimed at protecting agriculture and water resources. Key priorities include the development of water impounding and rainwater catchment systems. The province is also prepared to participate in cloud seeding operations if necessary.
In Camarines Norte, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has identified measures to assist affected farmers and fisherfolk. Agricultural damage in the province has reached approximately P53 million, particularly affecting rice production. To provide alternative livelihoods, Governor Ricarte Padilla has directed officials to assist residents in raising livestock or farming catfish. Additionally, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources is expected to provide 20,000 catfish fingerlings to support local food security.
