Philippines pushes for nuclear energy adoption to lower costs
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has reaffirmed the Philippines' commitment to adopting nuclear energy to stabilize the national grid and lower electricity costs, which are currently among the highest in Southeast Asia. During a visit to the Singapore Nuclear Research and Safety Institute (SNRSI), the President noted that public perception regarding the safety of nuclear power has improved, making the population more receptive to its use.
Marcos Jr. emphasized that nuclear power would serve as a vital complement to existing renewable sources like solar, wind, and geothermal energy. He also highlighted its potential to meet the rising energy demands of data centers, supporting the nation's digital economy ambitions.
However, some advocates are calling for faster implementation. Congressman Mark Cojuangco, chairman of the Special Committee on Nuclear Energy, urged the government to move beyond discussions and take concrete steps toward actual integration and the revival of the Philippine Nuclear Power Plant in Bataan. Organizations such as Alpas Pinas have also stressed the urgency of diversifying the energy mix to address recurring power shortages and high electricity prices.
