Philippines President Marcos Jr. Prepares for Fifth State of the Nation Address

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is reviewing and finalising his speech for the fifth State of the Nation Address, scheduled for Monday, July 27, 2026. Palace officials said the president is writing the address himself and hinted at a potentially "earthshaking" announcement, though specifics were not disclosed.

The address comes amid mounting concerns over corruption and fiscal pressures. Government estimates indicate that about PHP 8.8 trillion was lost to corruption between 2016 and 2025, representing missed opportunities for education, health and agricultural support. National debt has risen sharply, from roughly PHP 12.79 trillion when Marcos took office in 2022 to about PHP 18.55 trillion by May 2026, reflecting a reliance on borrowing to cover fiscal gaps.

Rising debt service obligations, a weakening peso and higher commodity prices have strained household purchasing power. Despite a PHP 85 wage increase, many families struggle with rising food, electricity and water costs. The upcoming SONA is expected to outline how the administration will confront these structural challenges, balance debt repayment with social spending, and set the agenda for the remainder of Marcos’ term.
