Philippines' reclaimed coastal settlements show subsidence, study finds

Researchers from the University of the Philippines Diliman Campus Geodesy Engineering Department analyzed three years of satellite radar data to track millimeter‑scale ground movements in reclaimed coastal areas. The monitoring focused on zones where large developments such as Seascape, SM by the Bay, City of Dreams and Solaire are located.

The study identified notable subsidence, with some points sinking about 17.5 mm per year. The researchers attribute the settlement to the gradual compaction of fill material, differing settlement rates across the area, and continued intensive construction activity. While not all reclaimed zones are at immediate risk, the findings stress the need for regular satellite‑based observation, especially around major structures, to detect early signs of structural problems. The work underscores the importance of incorporating long‑term ground‑movement assessments into the planning and maintenance of reclaimed coastal developments.
