Philippines secures €212.7 million World Bank loan for water projects

The Philippine Department of Finance has secured €212.7 million (approximately PHP 14.98 billion) in financing from the World Bank’s International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). The funds are designated for the Accelerated Water and Sanitation Project in Selected Areas (AWSPSA).

Implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways and the Department of the Interior and Local Government, the project aims to improve water security, disinfection, and sanitation services in underserved regions. Key infrastructure developments will include bulk water supply systems, septage treatment plants, and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities on the islands of Bohol, Siargao, and Sulu.

The AWSPSA represents the first phase of the World Bank’s Multiphase Programmatic Approach (MPA) Water Security and Resilience in East Asia & Pacific Program. This initiative is intended to build resilience against climate-related water risks and support the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028.
