Philippines suffer 4-1 defeat to Myanmar in opening ASEAN Hyundai Cup match

The Philippines opened Group B of the ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026 at New Clark City Athletics Stadium against Myanmar. Coach Carles Cuadrat fielded a very young side, with only two players over 30, hoping to build on a 5‑1 friendly win earlier in the year. Myanmar, led by new coach Jørn Andersen, scored early, with Kyaw Min Oo heading the opener after just seven minutes and Than Paing doubling the lead before the half‑hour mark.

The Azkals could only pull one goal back through Jarvey Gayoso in the 68th minute, but Myanmar added two more in the latter stages to secure a 4‑1 victory. Filipino media described the performance as “disappointing” and criticized the team's sluggish start and defensive lapses. The loss places the Philippines under pressure in the group, with their next game away to Laos before a home fixture against Thailand.
