Philippines targets rise in online illegal recruitment scams

The Philippine Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and VERA Files conducted a workshop to educate overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) on identifying digital hazards, including fake recruitment accounts, impersonators, and AI-generated content. Participants were trained in verification methods such as lateral reading and reverse image searches to combat online scams.

During a DMW budget hearing, Senator Joel Villanueva called for intensified efforts to combat online illegal recruitment, emphasizing that the government must move beyond removing fraudulent posts to focus on the prosecution and conviction of perpetrators. Data presented showed that while over 87,000 scam posts were removed in 2025 and over 44,000 in the first half of 2026, convictions remain low, with only nine recorded in 2025 and four in the first half of 2026.

DMW Undersecretary Bernard Olalia highlighted identity theft as a growing tactic, where scammers impersonate legitimate, licensed agencies. To mitigate risks, officials advise prospective workers to personally visit authorized agency branches to verify information.
