Philippines transport strike protests rising fuel prices

Transport workers in the Philippines have launched a nationwide strike to protest surging fuel prices and the rising cost of living. The demonstration, organized by unions including Piston and Manibela, involves thousands of drivers and operators of informal public transport vehicles, such as jeepneys.

Protesters are demanding that fuel prices be rolled back to 55 pesos per liter and are calling for the removal of value-added tax (VAT) and excise taxes on petroleum products. The unions have attributed the spike in oil costs to international conflicts, specifically citing the impact of the US-Israel war on Iran. Other demands include a living wage increase and adjustments to public utility vehicle fare hikes.

To mitigate the impact on commuters, the Philippine government has deployed thousands of police officers to maintain order and has provided free rides via buses and Department of Transportation services in various regions, including Metro Manila and Bicol. While some areas reported significant disruptions to commuting corridors, authorities noted that major rallies in the capital did not cause total systemic paralysis.
