Philippos Kambouris detained in 5 million euro EFKA fraud case
Philippos Kambouris, president of the LAOS party and a television presenter, along with his wife and four other defendants, have been ordered into pre-trial detention following an investigation into a massive fraud scheme targeting the Greek Social Insurance Institute (EFKA).
The alleged organized network, which has reportedly been operating since at least December 2013, utilized approximately 29 companies across the hospitality, nightlife, advertising, and clothing sectors. The scheme allegedly involved creating companies that accumulated debts to EFKA and the state—with individual company debts ranging between 30,000 and 80,000 euros—before being replaced by new entities. The total damage to the Greek state is estimated at approximately 5 million euros, with 1.5 million euros directly attributed to EFKA.
During marathon 17-hour judicial proceedings, Kambouris and his wife denied the charges, asserting that the matter involves simple corporate debt rather than fraud. Kambouris claimed he acted merely as an employee with clerical duties and was not responsible for accounting or tax management, instead placing responsibility on the company accountants.
In addition to the couple, the court ordered the detention of a 54-year-old accountant and a couple acting as strawmen. Another woman of Romanian origin remains in custody due to an outstanding European arrest warrant for an unrelated matter. Five other defendants were released under restrictive conditions, including travel bans and financial guarantees.
