Philippos Vardakastanis, disability rights advocate, passes away
The Greek disability rights movement is mourning the passing of Philippos Vardakastanis, a prominent advocate for persons with disabilities. Vardakastanis served as the President of the Zakynthos PwD Association ‘Oi Popolaroi’ and as Vice President of the Regional Federation of Persons with Disabilities of Western Greece and the South Ionian Islands.
In addition to his activism, Vardakastanis was a senior officer in the Hellenic Navy. Organizations including the National Confederation of Persons with Disabilities have praised his lifelong dedication to promoting equal participation in society, dignity, and the rights of individuals with disabilities. He was noted for his work in schools, where he promoted messages of acceptance and equality.
