Biomedical researchers announce multiple breakthroughs in genetics and cancer therapy
Researchers across Europe and the US have reported several breakthroughs in biomedical science, focusing on genetic regulation, disease detection, and targeted therapies.
In epigenetics, a new machine-learning tool called ‘metilene3’ has been developed by researchers in Berlin, Potsdam, and Jena. The software can identify DNA methylation patterns in unlabeled samples, allowing for the discovery of hidden biological patterns in blood cells and tumors without requiring prior sample classification.
In cancer research, teams at Philipps-Universität Marburg have successfully activated the PRMT1 enzyme using a small molecule called TR-07, which helps pancreatic cancer cells die more easily. Additionally, a British working group identified B- and T-cell signatures that may predict how melanoma patients respond to immunotherapy.
Other advancements include a method from the University of Cologne to quantify cellular damage in kidney and liver cells using gene expression, and a multifunctional, light-activated inhibitor developed at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg to control cell fate. Meanwhile, scientists at the Vienna Biocenter have successfully designed genetic ‘enhancers’ to better understand and manipulate gene activation.
