Kazuma Okamoto sets Blue Jays rookie records with 33 home runs

Kazuma Okamoto has set new Toronto Blue Jays franchise rookie records, finishing his first MLB season with 33 home runs and 92 RBIs. These figures surpass the previous rookie marks set by Eric Hinske in 2002.

In the Blue Jays' regular season finale against the Cincinnati Reds, Okamoto appeared as the starting third baseman. While he went hitless in two at-bats, he drew a walk that contributed to a two-run inning. Over 156 games, Okamoto led the team in both home runs and RBIs.

Blue Jays General Manager Ross Atkins praised Okamoto’s high level of adaptability and physical toughness, noting his ability to integrate into the clubhouse and handle the demands of playing third base full-time. Team staff also highlighted his exceptional ability to recall pitcher tendencies and his disciplined approach to nutrition and data.

The final game also featured a significant performance by 42-year-old pitcher Max Scherzer. Scherzer pitched 7 innings, allowing one run, to earn his 225th career victory and move to 3,557 career strikeouts, ranking ninth all-time in MLB history. The Blue Jays concluded their 50th anniversary season with a 79-83 record, finishing last in their division.
