Phillips makes successful Paris debut with €4.9 million auction

The auction house Phillips debuted in Paris during Paris Art Week, holding its ‘Art Moderne & Contemporain et Design’ auction at the Grand Palais. The event, coinciding with the house’s 230th anniversary, saw 48 of the 53 offered lots sold, achieving a sell-through rate by value of approximately 98%.

The auction raised nearly €4.9 million. The top lot was a 1930 painting by Joan Miró from the Marcel Brient collection, which sold for €503,100. This was followed by Marc Chagall’s ‘Le cheval à la lune’ (1943), which fetched €464,600.

Contemporary Chinese art also saw significant results. Artist Liu Guofu set a new auction record with ‘Cold Mountain 25-6’ (2025), selling for €283,800, well above its €60,000 low estimate. Additionally, Hsiao Chin’s ‘Pintura 5’ (1958) sold for €374,100.
