Belgian writer Raoul Vaneigem dies at 92

Raoul Vaneigem, a Belgian writer, philosopher and leading figure of the libertarian Situationist movement, died aged 92 in his Barcelona apartment on the night of 28‑29 July. His family described the death as quiet and natural.

Born in 1934 in Lessines, Belgium, Vaneigem co‑founded the Situationist International with Guy Debord and authored about fifty books. His 1967 pamphlet *Traité de savoir‑vivre à l’usage des jeunes générations* became a handbook for the students of May 1968, influencing the broader critique of consumer society. Local authorities in his hometown paid tribute to his cultural legacy.

Vaneigem’s work continues to be studied for its radical criticism of capitalism and its call for individual emancipation.
