Philosopher warns of AI impact on human cognitive skills

Philosopher Christoph Quarch has raised concerns regarding the impact of artificial intelligence on human cognitive development. In a discussion with SWR Aktuell, Quarch addressed the risks associated with outsourcing everyday problem-solving to AI.

Data from a Vodafone survey indicates that nearly all students aged 16 to 19 use AI for schoolwork. Quarch warns that relying on technology to solve problems quickly may prevent individuals from training their own cognitive abilities. He emphasizes that while AI can provide rapid answers, it lacks the capacity for true judgment and the ability to address fundamental questions of truth and morality.

To counter these risks, Quarch suggests that schools and society must focus on cultivating human skills that AI cannot simulate, specifically sensory understanding and critical judgment. He notes that these competencies are best developed through active conversation and engagement.
