Phish celebrates 1990s era with back‑to‑back shows at Madison Square Garden

The jam band Phish continued its five‑night summer residency at New York’s Madison Square Garden by staging two themed concerts that revisited the group’s 1993 and 1994 setlists. The first show focused on material the quartet performed in 1993, opening with “Llama” and featuring a 17‑minute “Bathtub Gin,” as well as selections from the album Rift and a rare rendition of “Daniel Saw the Stone.” The performance closed with a cover of ZZ Top’s “La Grange,” a song last played in 2012.

The following night turned to 1994, with the band opening set one with The Beatles’ “Back in the U.S.S.R.” and later covering AC DC’s “Highway to Hell” and Prince’s “Purple Rain.” Highlights included a 20‑minute “Simple,” several cuts from the 1994 album Hoist, and an extended “Tweezerfest” that wove the song “Tweezer” through multiple jams. Both concerts featured period‑specific outfits for guitarist Trey Anastasio and bassist Mike Gordon, underscoring the nostalgic theme of the residency.
