Phương Mỹ Chi blends traditional folk with modern pop in new album

Vietnamese singer Phương Mỹ Chi is exploring new musical territories with her latest project, the album ‘Dân Chơi Dân Ca’. The project aims to blend traditional Vietnamese folk elements—such as Xoan singing from Phu Tho, Thai Xoe, and Khmer melodies from the Mekong Delta—with modern genres like Pop, Rock, and Afrobeat.

Reflecting on her 13-year career, the artist noted that her goal is to inspire young people to embrace their cultural heritage through music. She expressed a desire to see audiences connect with traditional attire and customs through her songs. The album represents a transition from her earlier identity as a storyteller of textbook songs to a more contemporary artist exploring themes of love and youth.

Phương Mỹ Chi’s journey began at age six, supported by her family, and gained national recognition when she competed in ‘The Voice Kids Vietnam’ at age ten. By choosing to focus on folk music rather than following mainstream pop trends, she established a unique musical identity that she continues to evolve through modern arrangements.
