Phương Mỹ Chi removes controversial ethnic-inspired imagery

Vietnamese singer Phương Mỹ Chi has removed controversial promotional images from her social media following criticism regarding the use of traditional ethnic motifs. The images, part of her music project ‘Dan choi dan ca’, featured a stylized white dress with patterns inspired by the Piêu scarf, a significant cultural item used by the Black Thai people in Northwest Vietnam.

Critics and members of the Thai community argued that using the Piêu scarf as a decorative element on a dress was inappropriate, noting that the scarf is traditionally worn on the head or around the neck and holds deep spiritual and cultural significance.

In response, Phương Mỹ Chi expressed her respect for indigenous culture and stated that her intention was to promote ethnic beauty to a wider audience. She and her team have committed to adjusting the imagery to better respect local traditions and have since deleted the disputed photos.
