Kevin Durant and Suns owner Mat Ishbia clash on social media

Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia and Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant engaged in a public social media dispute following comments Ishbia made regarding Durant’s tenure in Phoenix.

In a CNBC Sport interview, Ishbia reflected on his early years as owner, stating that he had previously tried to “solve problems” by spending money on superstar talent rather than establishing a clear team identity. He noted that acquiring players like Durant “doesn’t necessarily lead to championships” and suggested the move was not aligned with his long-term vision for the franchise.

Durant responded on X, using the hashtag “#blameKD” and criticizing the owner’s framing of the situation. He remarked that Ishbia was acting as if he had been “arrested for a DUI or sumn,” while asserting that he maintained an elite level of play during his time in Arizona. Durant further suggested that the organization should be grateful for his contributions rather than criticizing the trade.

Ishbia responded to the criticism by clarifying that he did not blame Durant personally, but rather expressed satisfaction with the new culture being built in Phoenix. The dispute follows a period of mixed results for the Suns, who saw Durant traded to Houston after failing to achieve deep playoff success during his stint in Phoenix.
