Phoenix Suns waive Haywood Highsmith

The Phoenix Suns have waived veteran wing Haywood Highsmith to gain roster flexibility and financial relief. Highsmith, 29, will become an unrestricted free agent on Friday if he remains unclaimed.

Highsmith’s tenure in Phoenix was hampered by significant health issues. After undergoing surgery for a torn meniscus in his right knee in August 2025, he faced setbacks during his rehabilitation. He appeared in only seven regular-season games and two playoff games for the Suns during the 2025/26 season.

Prior to joining Phoenix in February 2026, Highsmith was a notable ‘three-and-D’ player for the Miami Heat, where he averaged 6.3 points and 3.3 rebounds during his final two seasons.

The move provides the Suns with substantial financial advantages. By waiving Highsmith, the team moves approximately $6.9 million below their second-apron hard cap and is projected to reduce their luxury tax bill by more than $11 million. Although his $3,018,158 expiring contract was not fully guaranteed, the Suns will be responsible for a $1 million partial guarantee unless he is claimed on waivers.
