Phonpee Suwannachavee addresses dam management and flood relief

Deputy Interior Minister Phonpee Suwannachavee has addressed criticisms regarding water management during recent flooding in Thailand. Responding to academic concerns about his request to slow water discharge at the Khun Dan Prakan Chon Dam in Nakhon Nayok, Suwannachavee clarified that he did not order a permanent closure. He stated his intention was to discuss temporary measures to mitigate rising water levels in residential areas, noting that the dam was at approximately 97% capacity at the time.

In Pak Chong, Nakhon Ratchasima, Suwannachavee inspected flood-affected areas impacting roughly 1,900 households. He directed authorities to expedite the restoration of the local water supply system, which had been disrupted by flooded pumping stations, and ordered the removal of structures obstructing waterways to prevent future flooding. He also noted that the Lam Takhong Dam's capacity had increased from 30% to 58% following heavy rains, but remains capable of managing the inflow.
